Parents

Dear Parents,

Our class is really looking forward to our graduation! We are all busy getting ready for the recital.

Before the recital begins all the parents will visit the classroom where student awards will be given.

We would like to ask every parent to come up to speak with their child and share reflections of their child's growth over the year. Each child will hear from their parent how they have grown up over the year and improved and matured in so many ways! They will feel proud in front of their class! We are sure this will be very meaningful for our students.

Please confirm with me that you have received this message and that you are happy to speak to our class!

Thanks so much!

"Reading Like Writers"

For the last phase of our Writing Workshop we will be learning to read in a new way - to read like writers!

How do writers warm up? They read other authors work! They notice the language, style and structure and they become inspired to create their own pieces.

We will be using books to warm up and their authors will "teach our class" writing.

Today we read "Hello, Harvest Moon" by Ralph Fletcher. We noticed "Memorable" writing that Ralph used. Words that sound wonderful and make us say "Oooohhh". For example: "It comes up round, ripe and huge". Ralph could have just written "It comes up big and full".

Authors like Ralph fletcher dont start off with wonderful writing. Their writing sounds quite ordinary to start with. But they work on it to make it extaordinary!

All the students in our class are Writers. Today we all wrote ordinary sentences and changed them to make them into memorable language.

Here are some memorable sentences that our class wrote:
Joshua - "my brother likes to read" - "My brother belongs in the happy books section in the library"
Daniel K - " The cars bumped into each other" - " The cars crashed like they were two friends hugging each other"
Noach - "It was all broken" - "The car parts were flying everywhere"
Daniel G - "My brother is happy" - "My brother is flying happiness"

(more to come...)

If you read at home together please look out for those wonderful, special, memorable sentences and lets start "reading like a writer"!

Health and Fitness Month

DURING THIS MONTH, WE WILL TAKE THE TIME TO REVIEW BASIC HEALTHY HABITS WITH THE CHILDREN, such as:
·       Eating healthy foods (especially veggies, fruits, whole grains)
·       Exercising
·       Going to bed early
·       Hand washing before eating
These will all be discussed in context of the Mitzvah of "Vnishmartem Meod es Nafshoseychem" - after all, Hashem has given us a gift - our bodies - and we need it in order to do Mitzvos with energy - so lets take good care it!!

THESE ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH AND FITNESS ACTIVITIES THAT WE WILL BE DOING THIS MONTH:
  1. 17th May - Power Walk on Brooklyn Bridge
  2. 25th May- Salad day ( I will let each child know which vegetable to bring and we will chop a salad together for lunch)
  3. 28th May - Jog on the Boardwalk
  4. 1st June - Visit Hatzalah for a presentation on health and safety over the summer
We would like to bring in a parent or relative of someone from our class to speak to the children about keeping healthy, safe or fit.
Please let me know if anyone has a job in any of these fields and would be interested in coming in to speak to our class about it.

Thanks!
